August 2001. We liked the Bike Friday Crusoe, which struck us as being the strongest Brompton competitor yet to emerge. It ultimately failed though, perhaps because America wasn’t ready for a folding bike revolution, and the Brompton was too firmly entrenched in the UK. European transport bikes (practical step-thru machines like Sparta and Gazelle) were just getting going in the UK, but they were another overseas idea that didn’t really go anywhere.
